Maker Reporter #41 - Studio Shahar Livne

Hi there, I am Shahar! I founded my studio in 2017 right after graduating from Design Academy Eindhoven, In my work, I use materials to tell Ecological narratives.

I research in a multi-level approach, understanding the philosophical, chemical, cultural, and personal stories that material carries. In many cases, my projects become a bit provocative, although my approach is neutral and act as an invitation for people to make their own open and curious investigation.

In 2019 I was listed as one of the 100 most influential creatives in the world by ICON magazine. Since then, the studio has become well known around the world which has led to more exhibitions and wonderful collaborations and commissions for international big brands. My main work is also around self-initiated research projects. I needed a place where I could experiment dirty (although I am a very clean person). I work with really strange materials, and not afraid of learning about new ones, I wanted to meet like-minded makers and designers instead of working all by myself. After graduating, suddenly you find yourself a bit isolated. So I looked for a fun hands-on atmosphere and that is how I came across Microlab. I really love my community, the “Dirty space” is so dynamic and enriching!

What I love the most about my job is that I have endless freedom, since I am an independent designer I work sometimes on the border of art and can wake up every day doing only what fascinates me and gives me passion.
